FAMILY SPIRIT AND EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Family Spirit LogoThe Family Spirit and Empowerment Program is an evidence based and culturally specific “Home Visiting” Program for Native Americans. The Leech Lake Program is designed to be delivered by Tribal Paraprofessionals with a core strategy to support and educate Native American families in daily life skills in an Ojibwe specific manner. The program supports Native American women who are pregnant, or women pregnant with Native American babies, Fathers, or any families raising Native American babies and children.

Program Objectives

  • Increase parenting knowledge and skills
  • Address maternal psychosocial skills to promote positive child rearing
  • Promote optimal physical, cognitive, social/emotional development for children ages 0-5
  • Prepare children and parents for early school success
  • Ensure parents are educated regarding well-child visits, immunizations, and health care
  • Link families to community services and cultural events/education that addresses specific needs
  • Promote parent’s’ and children’s Ojibwe life skills and cultural outcomes across the lifespan
  • Assist men to Become a Responsible Father/Partner, both partners to Co-Parent, learn Healthy Relationship Skills, Ojibwe Cultural Family
  • Skills, and how feelings of strength and fears can be addressed in a healthy manner
  • Address Child Support, Custody, & Visitation, Substance Abuse, Economic Stability & Employment
  • Address Domestic Abuse and how the Ojibwe Culture defines and sees both men and women as sacred

How often do we meet?

The Family Spirit Home Visitors and Community Cultural Advocates do in home visits weekly, monthly, or when-ever the participant/client wishes. There are also group meetings available and group events. There is also walk-in or office visits available and meetings in parks or where-ever the participant/clients wishes to meet. The program is very much a participant/client led program designed to be easily accessible.

There are 63 lesson on life skills which are very culturally designed specific to Ojibwe customs and traditions.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Any member of a Federally recognized Tribe or descendant of a member of a federally recognized Tribe
  • Any person who is a caretaker of a child from a federally recognized Tribe or is a member of a federally recognized Tribe

Service Area

Leech Lake Reservation and 25 miles of the LLBO territory including Beltrami, Hubbard, Cass.

This program is FREE to all federally recognized Tribal Members and their descendants or caretakers of babies and children of federally recognized Tribal members and their descendants.
